ICS 1973

Convenor: Peter A Gammelgaard

Scientific Chair: Tage Hald

Special features
The ICS logo was derived from the original version created by the Danish group organising the Copenhagen meeting. The members of the Standardisation Committee successfully proposed its adoption to the Society at its next AGM.

A welcome was made personally by Peter Gammelgaard inviting members of the organising committee to his home for a reception. Peter later became an Honorary Member of ICS.

Peter Gammelgaard established the first specialized department of urology in Denmark at Gentofte Hospital. He published on topics of cardiac embryology, blood group antigens and vascular disease, and endocrinology as well as urology. He travelled widely and the contacts made proved helpful to junior colleagues in their gaining positions and collaborations.

He was an erudite genial and generous host, both in the run up to the Continent Club and at the 3rd ICS meeting in Copenhagen in 1973, for which he was convenor. It was obvious he held Tage Hald in high regard, and was very supportive throughout. During the early stages he and his wife entertained members of the organizing committee in his home, which had a delightful driveway, lined by candlelight in the early evening.

He is remembered as a great man with an international reputation for his personal knowledge and skills, wisdom and great warmth, and who gave considerable support to the formation and subsequent activities of the ICS.
