Further advanced training in incontinence was with Prof Peter Huat Chye Lim at Changi General Hospital, Singapore and also was also actively involved in continence promotion through the society for continence, Singapore with Ms Rani Vadiveloo (1995-1998). The society undertook a plethora of activities such as public forums, galas, chat shows, organised several innovative fund raising activities, incontinence surveys, annual workshops for nurses training under the Ministry of Health and workshops, courses and conferences for doctors in incontinence.
The ICS website “ContiNet” was initiated during this period and was developed and maintained with Prof Peter H C Lim as its webmaster. Dr Vasan participated and conducted a workshop on Internet and E-mail Security protocol at the ICS Meet (Yokohama, Japan, 1997). Since then, he has been in-charge of development of the continence website (www.continenceworldwide.com) to highlight “Continence Promotion Committee (CPC) activities, which has since integrated into the ICS website (www.icsoffice.org).
As a council member of the Asia Pacific Continence Advisory Board (APCAB) and the Asian Society for Female Urology (ASFU), he was actively involved in promoting continence in Asia. He was instrumental in organising the 5th Scientific Meeting of the Asian Society for Female Urology and 6th Asia Pacific Continence Advisory Board Conference in Bangalore in 2003. The foundation has established a state-of-the-art facility to train doctors in comprehensive management of incontinence and urodynamics. The ICS’s first activity in India, a course in Mumbai conceptualised in collaboration with Indian Continence Foundation (November 2006) of which Dr Vasan was a faculty, proved a great success.
As the India project leader, he has developed a new Internet Communication Technological Tool (ICT) with the funding, support and initiative of the European Union (Asia-EU link project). The aim of the project, undertaken with Italy, Slovenia and China, has been to frame a new curriculum to improve the ‘quality of life’ for people with Urinary incontinence, and to create new professional – ‘Continence therapist’.
