ERIC’s Paediatric Continence Care Conference 2016

ERIC, The Children’s Bowel and Bladder Charity has announced the date for this year’s Paediatric Continence Care Conference titled ‘Right Time, Right Place, Right Care’. The conference, which takes place every two years, will be held on Wednesday 12th October at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole. The conference is sponsored by Ferring Pharmaceuticals and Stirling Anglian, with the support of the Nursing Times.

The one day conference will showcase new research in the field of childhood and adolescent bowel and bladder health, highlight the impact of continence problems on the everyday lives of children and teenagers, and discuss innovative approaches to managing problems.

CPD points for nurses attending ERIC’s Paediatric Continence Care Conference
Our Paediatric Continence Care Conference has been approved by the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH) for up to a maximum of five Continuing Professional Development (CPD) credits.
5 CPD credits can be obtained if delegates attend an optional ‘Breakfast Symposium’ session which will run from 8.30am to 9.15am in addition to the general programme or
4 CPD credits can be obtained if delegates attend only the general programme from 10.00am to 16.30pm and not the ‘Breakfast Symposium’.

Topics covered during the conference will include: how to develop an integrated faecal incontinence service, risk outcomes associated with incontinence, current pressures facing community services, early intervention for bladder and bowel problems, toilet training children with learning difficulties, using play when toileting, and biofeedback training and neuromodulation. There will also be a demonstration on how to use ERIC’s soon-to-be-launched children’s continence pathway.

The conference is an opportunity to hear from members of ERIC’s Children’s Panel who live with bladder and bowel difficulties. There will also be a talk from an adult who has wet the bed since his teens about what difference early intervention and support from ERIC might have made to his life.

Speakers will include:

  • Dr Anne Wright, lead consultant responsible for the children’s bladder clinic at Evelina Children’s Hospital (Guys and St Thomas).
  • Brenda Cheer, Paediatric Specialist Continence Nurse at the University Hospital of Wales and ERIC Nurse.
  • Dr Carol Joinson, Senior Lecturer in Developmental Psychology at the School of Social and Community Medicine, University of Bristol.
  • Katie Whale, Health Psychology Researcher at the Centre for Child and Adolescent Health, University of Bristol.
  • Alison Wardley, Team Manager Children’s Community Nursing, South Essex Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust (SEPT).
  • Sue Davis, Specialist Children’s Nursery Nurse experienced in helping parents toilet train children with special needs.
  • Georgina Malakounides, paediatric surgeon with a subspecialty in colorectal interest, Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, London.

Nominate someone for the ERIC Award
Delegates and non-delegates are invited to nominate a health professional who has shown excellence in child and adolescent continence care for ERIC’s Award for Childhood Continence Care. The award, which is sponsored by Coloplast, includes a £500 cheque, free entry to the conference and gala dinner plus travel expenses. Nomination forms can be downloaded from the conference website and should be returned by 15th September.

Submit a poster for presentation
Professionals who have recently completed relevant research or projects who would like to get their work in front of a large multi-disciplinary audience are invited to submit posters for presentation at the conference. The best three posters will also be presented orally and the overall winner will receive a prize. Guidelines for writing and submitting abstracts can be found on the conference website - eric.org.uk/conference. The deadline for submitting an abstract is 1st August 2016.
