Innovation and Translation to Clinical Care

  • Round Table Discussion 3
  • Thursday 14th October 2021
  • 18:30 - 19:30 CEST
  • Live Room 1
  • In-Person and online attendees
  • ICS Members OnlyRestricted Video

This round table will present three diverse, innovative medical devices that have made it from the bench to bedside. From highly technical surgical robotics (Versius®), an implantable device for BPH/LUTs (Urolift®) to a novel pressure sensor array, designed to help manage pelvic floor health in women (femfit®). We will discuss how long it actually takes to achieve true translation, the highlights and pitfalls of commercialisation and some war stories, notably how to avoid the ‘Valleys of Death’ for medical device development. Commercialisation of inventions and ideas is a hot topic, particularly that many funding bodies are seeking this as outcomes for their investment.

Learning objectives:

  • The role of the investigator vs inventor
  • Should I leave or should I stay?
  • When is the right time to commercialise?
  • Broad information on regulatory requirements for the different classes of Medical Devices, The importance, and expense of patents.
