Abstract

Hypothesis / aims of study
Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a common medical disorder that primarily affects men older than 40 years of age. ED has been broadly defined as the inability to achieve or maintain an erection sufficiently rigid for satisfying sexual intercourse. There were a studies about association between Erectile Dysfunction ( E.D ) and Chronic Periodontitis ( CP) in some countries. The aim of this study to evaluate the relation of ED among Saudi men who visit the dental centers.
Study design, materials and methods
It is an analytical cross sectional study by using non probability consecutive sampling technique. A self-administered questionnaire sheets were distributed to the male patients who received a comprehensive dental examination and had ability to answer the interview sheet in the dental centers in Aljouf region, north of Saudi Arabia, and its cities. The total number of patients participated in this study were 1001. Three teams from our students and physicians were divided to the centers to distribute the questionnaire and become ready for any Inquire or information.
A total number of ( 1001) patients who visit the dental centers of aljouf region in KSA were filled a Questionnaire in order to detect ED and CP and assess their severity and the relation between them.
The age ranged between (20- 65) years
Results
From them (810 patients) have non chronic Periodontitis and191 patients have a chronic Periodontitis.
the patients in the chronic periodontitis group were older (p<0.001), and had a higher incidence of HTN, DM, CVD, dyslipidemia, and ED. Mean shim score was lower in those patients (p<0.001).
Interpretation of results
From them (810 patients) have non chronic Periodontitis and191 patients have a chronic Periodontitis.
the patients in the chronic periodontitis group were older (p<0.001), and had a higher incidence of HTN, DM, CVD, dyslipidemia, and ED. Mean shim score was lower in those patients (p<0.001).
The prevalence of ED in Saudi patients with CP was 27.7%. There are the same risk factors between the ED and CP which play a role in the association between ED and CP.
Concluding message
Patients with CP should have more strict screening and evaluation for early detection and proper management of ED.
