40 years after her first ICS meeting, Linda was awarded the ICS Lifetime Achievement Award. Watch this interview where Linda talks about her outstanding career.
This award is given to honour an individual who has made a lifetime commitment and lasting contribution to the advancement of science, education, clinical practice or public awareness in the field of continence (including function and dysfunction of the urinary tract, bowel and pelvic floor).
Linda's first meeting was in 1977 in Pororoz, Slovenia where she had a poster and podium abstract accepted. Her podium was during the last session on the last day and sadly there were few in the audience to see the first presentation of her work. However, Linda found the meeting, and the people that she met, inspiring and she felt compelled to return. Linda states that she was "in awe of the people she met. And the multidisciplinary aim of the group, to improve the lives of men, women and children suffering with incontinence."
Linda has held a number of positions at ICS including Trustee and Education Committee Chair. Other notable positions include President of the International Urogynaecological Association, European Urogynaecological Association, Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Women's Health and Section of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of the Royal Society of Medicine. Her publications include more than 400 original papers in peer review journals, 22 books and 120 book chapters. She is a member of the Editorial Board of 12 Scientific Journals and was an Editor of the recently published book, Incontinence, 6th edition.
Linda notes that the award wasn't just given to her for her success as a member of ICS, but also for her professional achievements which cover clinical practice, education and research.
Reflecting on her career, what Linda is most proud of and regards herself as most successful in is "enabling others to achieve a potential that would have been unattainable without her assistance." To date Linda has trained 8 speciality trainees in urogynecology, 50 clinical research fellows and nurses, all of whom are promoting urogynecology to a high standard all over the world.
