Abstract

Hypothesis / aims of study
Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) associated with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) in men and it has negative effects on quality of Life (QoL). We aimed to investigate the treatment pattern of BPH in men in Korea.
Study design, materials and methods
Information on BPH treatment procedures and diagnoses was obtained from the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service-Aged Patient Sample (HIRA-APS). We used over 60 years old men data 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, respectively. We surveyed treatment trend for BPH according to the type of institution. Treatment trend included type of drug and type of surgery.
Results
Of the subjects 18,260~24,657 men were included in this cohort (from 2012 to 2016). Patients’ number showed increased pattern and drug was the major treatment method for BPH (up to 98.77%). The pattern of increase using drug for BPH was also reinforced as increasing the number of patients.
Only alpha blocker used group was dominant in this cohort up to 45.7 %. Transurethral resection of prostate (TURP) was the most popular surgical treatment for BPH up to 53.6 %. However, TURP was relatively decreased percentage of surgical treatment and holmium laser enucleation of prostate (HoLEP) was observed increase pattern from 19.4% to 39.7%.
Interpretation of results
The major treatment of BPH was observed drug
Concluding message
The major treatment of BPH was observed drug and only alpha blocker used group was most popular pattern of prescribe. The surgical treatment pattern was changed from TURP to HoLEP.
