Hypothesis / aims of study
Urinary retention is a significant concern in men and can arise from various conditions, including spinal cord injuries (SCI) and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), affecting their quality of life.
Intermittent self-catheterization (ISC) is widely recognized as the best solution for managing urinary retention, however it is not entirely clear which parameters are most important for the users when choosing catheters.
The aim of this study was to assess preferences for males choosing intermittent catheters and their perceptions of a new catheter with a protective sleeve and flexible tip, LoFric™ Origo Sleeve Flexible.
Study design, materials and methods
A survey was distributed to 362 male ISC users across the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Spain, the Netherlands, Italy and Denmark during 2024. The subjects were a mix between new and experienced ISC users. The primary outcome was patient satisfaction evaluated on a 5 graded scale.
Results
The survey findings indicated that the factors mainly influencing the decision when choosing the catheter were in order; hygienic aspects (not having to touch the catheter surface), smooth insertion and withdrawal, handling, recommendation by healthcare professional, and catheter tip, respectively. Interestingly, the majority of respondents (92%) thought that LoFric Origo Sleeve made them feel more confident of catheterizing in a hygienic manner. The use of a protective sleeve during insertion was mentioned by 87% to make it easy to learn how to catheterize.
In terms of smooth insertion and withdrawal 83% reported LoFric Origo Sleeve Flexible to make insertion of the catheter smooth and painless. Notably, the results revealed that 86% considered this catheter smooth and painless also during withdrawal. The majority (84%) of respondents had maintained urethral sensitivity and 68% catheterized 3 to 5 times per day.
Interpretation of results
Hygiene is an important aspect when performing ISC and users clearly select a catheter with a handling grip for reduced risk of bacteria contamination and improved safety. These survey results show that LoFric Origo Sleeve Flexible fulfills these criteria.
By avoiding microtrauma to the urethra with a smooth and lubricated catheter surface associated complications like infections can be reduced. A maintained slippery surface also at withdrawal is of specific importance. A flexible tip making the insertion smooth and painless is associated to a superior user experience and the current survey shows that 89% of the participants considered LoFric Origo Sleeve Flexible to be the perfect choice for them.
Having a catheter with a smooth surface that remains lubricated during both insertion and withdrawal is key to avoid microtrauma and complications, like urinary tract infections (UTI). Also, hygienic aspects are known to be important for user compliance and minimizing risks of introducing foreign bacteria via the catheter.
