Abstract

Hypothesis / aims of study
This study aimed to explore regional and temporal variations in online search interest for male genital aesthetic procedures across the Middle East, with the hypothesis that sociocultural, economic, and infrastructural factors would influence these trends. The goal was to analyze Google search data regarding male genital aesthetic procedures in the Middle East, offering valuable insights for healthcare providers and policymakers.
Study design, materials and methods
A retrospective analysis was conducted using Google® Trends data from January 2020 to December 2024. The Relative Search Volume (RSV) for five key male genital aesthetic procedures—scrotoplasty, penile fillers, penile implants, liposuction & mini abdominoplasty, and penile lengthening—was examined across nine Middle Eastern countries: Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Yemen, and Oman. The data were analyzed to identify significant regional variations, temporal trends, and correlations with external events.
Results
Saudi Arabia and Kuwait showed the highest overall search interest, particularly for penile implants and penile lengthening, indicative of a preference for invasive surgical solutions. Jordan and Lebanon demonstrated moderate but notable interest, especially in minimally invasive procedures like penile fillers and liposuction. Countries affected by conflict or economic hardship (Iraq, Syria, Yemen) and smaller Gulf states (Bahrain, Oman) exhibited significantly lower interest levels, highlighting economic and infrastructural impacts (Figure 1). Notably, search interest surged following external events such as the easing of COVID-19 restrictions and targeted media campaigns promoting advanced penile implant technologies (Figure 2). While seasonal fluctuations were subtle, a consistent drop-in search activity during Ramadan followed by subsequent increases was observed.
Interpretation of results
These findings highlight the complex interplay of sociocultural openness, economic stability, and infrastructural capacity in influencing public interest in elective medical procedures. The marked preference for surgical procedures in wealthier Gulf countries contrasts with moderate interest in non-surgical alternatives in Levantine countries, suggesting regional variation in acceptance and accessibility. Limited search activity in economically unstable regions underscores the direct influence of socio-political conditions on healthcare-seeking behaviors. The surge in online searches aligned with external events demonstrates that healthcare information dissemination via media significantly impacts public health behaviors, emphasizing the need for responsible messaging and accurate public education initiatives.
Concluding message
Significant regional disparities in online interest for male genital aesthetic procedures across the Middle East highlight sociocultural and economic influences. These findings emphasize the need for tailored educational programs and resource allocation to support informed healthcare decisions and address public concerns effectively.
