Study design, materials and methods
Materials and methods:
All consecutive patients who underwent various types of surgical interventions for urethral pathologies at Department of Urological Surgery and Transplantation in Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center (JPMC), from January 2018 to June 2023 were included in this study. Short-term success rate via determination of improvement in patients’ symptoms and UFM parameters, complications and need for redo procedures were noted. Data was retrieved from the patients’ case files and analyzed on SPSS version 26.0.
Results
Results:
A total of 522 patients underwent various surgical procedures for the treatment of urethral pathologies during the study period. The mean age was 34.82 ± 17.05 years (range: 9 to 87 years) and mostly the affected individuals were of male gender (93.41%).
88 patients presented with hypospadias for which different techniques were implanted in management including single stage and staged urethroplasties without good success. Failure rate was estimated as 10.3%. Similarly, 16 patients presented with urethrocutaneous fistulas, majority of which were managed with primary repair and few required urethroplasty. 287 patients presented with urethral strictures, either post traumatic or secondary to infective etiologies, Different strategies were applied in treating those patients like DVIU with and without optilume and urethroplasty. The success rate according to type of urethroplasty showed that EPA for anterior urethral stricture had best results. In BMG urethroplasty, the success rate was 90%. The complications varied according to the type of urethroplasty. EPA urethroplasty had lowest complication rate, especially when done for short bulbar stricture. The hospital stay ranged from 2-5 days.
Interpretation of results
