Abstract

Hypothesis / aims of study
ChatGPT and AI, when used as active study tools, can significantly enhance preparation for the FRCS Urology Viva exam by improving adherence to clinical guidelines (such as EAU) and refining the clarity, structure, and delivery of oral responses.
Study design, materials and methods
This is a reflective case study based on one candidate’s structured preparation for the FRCS Urology Viva over a 10-week period. ChatGPT and AI were used in focused, self-directed study sessions to simulate viva scenarios, practice clinical reasoning, and receive real-time feedback on answer structure and language. The study design included daily or near-daily AI-driven mock viva interactions, guideline-based content validation (primarily using EAU guidelines), and iterative refinement of response delivery under timed conditions.
Results
Several clear benefits were observed during the AI-assisted study period:
Stronger Guideline Adherence: ChatGPT was consistently able to reference and reinforce the use of current EAU guidelines in response to clinical scenarios. This helped ensure that the information used in viva answers was both current and aligned with expected clinical standards.
Improved Answer Structure and Logic: AI interaction encouraged a more disciplined approach to oral responses. Answers became clearer, more structured, and easier to reproduce consistently. Practicing with AI helped streamline thoughts and reduce irrelevant or disorganized content.
Sharper Communication and Language Use: The AI’s ability to instantly suggest alternative phrasings or correct imprecise statements allowed for rapid improvement in language use. Over time, this led to more concise, professional, and consultant-level responses.
Simulated Examiner Interaction: ChatGPT was able to mimic the follow-up style of viva examiners, including asking probing or scenario-extending questions. This added a valuable layer of realism and unpredictability, helping build confidence in responding to complex or evolving scenarios.
Confidence and Exam Readiness: By the end of the preparation period, self-assessed performance showed marked improvement across key areas—content accuracy, delivery, composure, and response flexibility. The candidate reported increased readiness and confidence in approaching the viva exam format.
Interpretation of results
This case supports the idea that ChatGPT and AI can be powerful study aids when used deliberately and with structure. In preparation for a high-stakes oral exam like the FRCS Urology Viva, they help bridge several common gaps: from organizing complex thoughts under pressure, to ensuring consistency with clinical guidelines, to building fluency in professional language.

Unlike passive learning methods, AI enables active engagement. It responds dynamically, provides feedback in real time, and allows candidates to rehearse under simulated exam conditions. This creates a feedback loop that speeds up improvement and makes studying more efficient. Importantly, it offers low-cost, flexible access to high-quality revision, especially for candidates who may not always have access to peer or faculty viva practice.

In conclusion, ChatGPT and similar AI tools offer meaningful advantages in preparing for the FRCS Urology Viva. They reinforce evidence-based thinking, promote structured delivery, and build communication confidence. While not a replacement for clinical training or peer discussion, AI proves to be a valuable supplemental resource in the journey toward examination success.
Concluding message
The integration of ChatGPT and AI into FRCS Urology Viva preparation offers a practical, effective, and scalable way to enhance performance. By improving alignment with clinical guidelines, sharpening communication, and simulating examiner interactions, AI serves as a powerful study companion. While it should not replace traditional clinical mentorship or peer discussion, its ability to provide structured, on-demand practice makes it an invaluable tool in the modern exam preparation toolkit.
