Dr. Villanueva graduated from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Mexico (UNAM) School of Medicine. His general surgeon residency was at Hospital Juárez de Mexico and subsequently continued his training in Coloproctology (Colon and Rectal Surgery) at Hospital General de Mexico
He obtained a Master’s degree in Medical Sciences from the Instituto Politécnico Nacional. Dr. Villanueva’s Masters Dissertation was about the development of a transcutaneous electrostimulation method for the treatment of anal fissures. Dr. Villanueva is currently carrying out studies on fecal incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, evacuation disorders, anorectal manometry, anorectal ultrasound.
He was founder of Clínica Especializada en Colon, Recto y Ano (CECRA) [Colon, Rectum and Anus Specialty Clinic]), a specialized care center in Mexico City which is exclusively dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of colorectal related pathologies
For several years he has been invited by the Mexico Health Secretary State as a coordinator for the national Clinical Practice Guidelines of colorectal diseases.
He was former Chairman of Coloproctology for the ALAPP (Latinamerican Asociation of Pelvic Floor) 2018 congress in Mexico City.
He is currently full time professor for the Postgraduate Course in Anorectal Physiology and Posterior Pelvic Floor at UNAM (National Autonomous University of Mexico) and associate professor of the coloproctology residency (fellowship) program.
