Fumihiko Urabe, MD, PhD
(Surgery: Urological Surgery)
Fumihiko Urabe, MD PhD, is graduated from the Jikei University School of Medicine in 2012 and completed his residency at the same institution. He joined Division of Molecular and Cellular Medicine, National Cancer Research Institute (prof. Takahiro Ochiya’s lab) in 2016 and obtained PhD in 2020. He is currently appointed as clinical associate of the Jikei University School of Medicine and works as a staff urologist in the same institution. His research focuses on miRNA, liquid biopsy, and extracellular vesicles (EVs) in urological cancers.
In liquid biopsy research, Dr. Urabe established models based on combinations of circulating microRNAs to detect prostate cancer and bladder cancer with high sensitivity and specificity by using large-scale microarray analyses. As a first author and first co-author of each paper, he showed that the circulating microRNAs could be a practical novel detection and prediction method for urological cancer, and these studies were selected as highlights of this issue in each journals.
In EV research, Dr. Urabe showed a novel insight into microRNA-mediated tumor suppression by inhibiting EV biogenesis. EVs, whose attention was paid recently, is known for cancer progression, however, the secretion mechanisms of EVs in prostate cancer and their contribution for cancer progression have not been elucidated. The results of his study elucidated further understanding of cancer development and provided novel approaches for prostate cancer treatment.
