Francesco Pesce, MD, FEBU:
- Born in Rome on 8th February 1951;
- Italian.

EDUCATION
1977 He received his medical degree from the La Sapienza University of Rome, with the highest score.
1980 He completed residency in Urology at the Urology Department of La Sapienza University of Rome (Director: Prof. U. Bracci).
1990 He completed residency in Neurology at the Neurology Department of La Sapienza University of Rome (Director: Prof C. Morocutti). He discussed the final thesis on neurogenic erectile dysfunction.
1992 He was certified by the European Board of Urology (EBU, President:: Prof. M. Camey).
1997 He got a Diploma in Sexual Medicine and Andrology at the Department of Endocrinology/Andrology of La Sapienza University of Rome (Director: Prof. A. Isidori).
1982-1993 He trained in Neuro-Urology, Urodynamics and Erectile Dysfunction by performing several stages at the Dept of Urology of the Boston University Medical Centre (Director: Dr. R.J. Krane). He also trained in Sacral Neuromodulation and in diagnosis and treatment of Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome with Dr. R. Schmidt at the Dept. of Urology of University of California and University of Colorado.

CLINICAL EXPERIENCE
1985-1987 Assistant Urologist at the “Regina Apostolorum” Hospital of Albano (Rome).
From 1.2.89
to 20.6.97: Assistant Neuro-urologist at the Department of Neurological Sciences of La Sapienza University of Rome.
During this time he set up the Neuro-Urology and Urodynamics laboratory of this institution, founded and directed the Continence Clinic of the Rehabilitation Hospital “Santa Lucia” (National Research Institute), was consultant neuro-urologist at the spinal cord injury centres of The Hospital CTO (Rome) and CPO (Ostia).

To 31.8.2001: Associate Urologist, at the Dept of Urology, University of Modena Medical Centre-Policlinico Hospital, Modena (Director: Prof. W. Artibani).
At this Institution he was Director of the Urodynamics and Neuro-Urology Laboratory and of the Andrology Clinic, set-up and directed the Urinary Incontinence and Chronic Pelvic Pain Clinic.

EXPERIENCE WITH CLINICAL TRIALS
During the years 1997-2007 he has been and currently is investigator/principal investigator in several clinical research trials of drugs or medical devices for the treatment of urinary incontinence. These include tolterodine, darifenacin, tamsulosin, BXL628, Dx co-polymer, Uryx, Deflux, botulinum toxin etc.
For this reason he participated in numerous investigator meetings covering in detail all the ethical, regulatory affairs, procedural issues involved in the conduction of clinical trials, gaining an excellent knowledge of Good Clinical Practice.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE
From 1997 he was teacher in the Residency Programme in Urology at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, From 2001 to April 2005 he was teacher at the Residency Programme in Urology at the University of Verona,
From 2005 he is teacher at the University School of Physiotherapy of the University Tor Vergata of Rome, in the Residency Programme in Urology at Catholic University of Rome, in the Residency Programmes in Urology, in Neurology and in Geriatrics of the Campus Biomedico University of Rome.

He has served in the European Study Group on Sexual and Urological Disturbances in Multiple Sclerosis (SUDIMS), UE-sponsored activity.

He also has served on expert advisory committees for drug developments of manufacturers like Lilly, Boeheringer Ingelheim, Kiowa, Allergan.

He is currently member of the following Committees of the International Continence Society: Education Committee, Neurourology Promotion (Chair), and School of Urodynamics

He gained a sound expertise in the field of Neuro-Urology, Urodynamics, Urogynaecology, Chronic Pelvic Pain, Vulvodynia, Pudendal neuropathy, Andrology, Neuro-Andrology, Ultrasounds, and became highly skilled in the use and interpretation of several tests and in the performance of the following techniques, among others:

  • Standard Urodynamics, Continuous urodynamic Monitoring, Video- urodynamics;
  • Neuro-physiological Testing in Neuro-Urology: Sensory Evoked Potentials, Sacral Latency Test, Motor Evoked Potentials with trans-cranial magnetic stimulation; Pelvic floor EMG; Biothesiometry; Current Sensory Threshold with Neurometer.
  • Sacral deafferentation and sacral anterior root stimulation implants (Brindley technique); Sacral Neuromodulation; Posterior Tibial Nerve Stimulation.
  • Botulinum toxin Injections into the external urethral sphincter, the detrusor muscle and the pelvic floor muscles;
  • periurethral Injections for urinary stress incontinence:
  • Traditional Chinese Acupuncture for the lower urinary tract disturbances;
  • Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation techniques, including Thiele massage, trigger point release and trigger point injections;
  • Pudendal nerve blocks;
  • Tests for erectile dysfunction: Nocturnal Rigidometry; Dynamic Penile Eco-colour Doppler; Dynamic Cavernosometry/graphy;
  • Neuro-Andrologic Techniques: Penile Vibration, Elettroejaculation, Pharmacoprosthesis.
